German Student Corps
Corps ("das ~" (n), pronounced [ko?r] (sg.), [ko?rs] (pl.)) are the oldest still-existing kind of Studentenverbindung, Germany's traditional university corporations; their roots date back to the 15th century. The oldest today still existing corps was founded in 1789. Although distinct, the corps are in few aspects similar to and serve many of the same purposes of college fraternities found in the United States and to a lesser extent Canada.
Corps are the oldest still existing kind of student fraternities in the German-speaking countries. Corps students wear ribbons and caps in the colours of their fraternity. Basic tradition of the corps is the academic fencing.
Based on the concept of tolerance, corps have no limitation regarding origin, nationality and religion of their members.
Corps students form a life-long community. After they have finished their studies they become members of the Old Brothers’ Organisation of their fraternity which gives financial and practical support to the young students.
More than 160 corps are based in approximately 50 universities today. More than 20,000 students and professionals all over the world call themselves “corps students”.
